There’s something special about the versatility and vibrancy of acrylic paint pens. you may have seen on my Instagram they seem to be my latest obsession. Experienced artists love them. But so do I! A girl who loved art at school but absolutely did not stand out. Acrylic pens can be little tools that open up a world of opportunities.
I first discovered acrylic paint pens when painting rocks my children. We were camping in our VW camper van in Scotland. So as a Mum of two young kids need to have many a rainy day plan. Among my stash were these paint pens. We collected beautiful rocks and painted them, excitedly hiding them for other people to find. They are a simple and fun way to get creative without the mess of traditional paints. No way I would take paint camping!
Recently I have realised they could do so much more. Now, I mainly use them to decorate picture frames and mounts. I love turning something ordinary into a unique, handcrafted piece of art.
My Favorite Ways to Use Acrylic Paint Pens
1. Decorating Picture Mounts – One of my favourite projects is drawing cute illustrations or patterns directly onto picture mounts. Sometimes I go for playful doodles. Other times I opt for simple stripes to add a pop of colour around a cherished photo.
2. Customising Frames – The beauty of acrylic paint pens is that they work on so many surfaces including wood, plastic, and glass. I love using them to add little details to the frames themselves, making them unique.
3. Creating the Illusion of a Decorative Mount – One trick I have used recently is drawing on the back of the board inside the frame. This gives the appearance of a decorative mount. You do have to make sure the art work is fixed to the back of the frame too so it doesn’t slide. It is such a fun way to experiment with layering and design.
Acrylic paint pens, especially my go-to Posca Pens, are incredibly user-friendly. They are quick drying, easy to control and have the most delicious, opaque colours that work on almost any surface. No need for brushes or cleanup!
